eCommerce UX & Order Process: User Experience That Sells
Book a calleCommerce UX is the difference between a shop that “works” and one that sells. 70 % of customers abandon the cart because the order process is too complicated. Over 60 % of traffic comes from mobile, but most shops are built for desktop. That is not design. That is revenue destruction.
Why UX is more important than any marketing campaign
You can invest 50,000 Euro in Google Ads. When your order process has three pages, shows unclear shipping costs and offers no payment options except credit card, you burn the money.
The mathematics is brutal: at 1.5 % conversion and 2 Euro CPC, every customer costs you 133 Euro. At 2.5 % conversion only 80 Euro. The difference is not the advertising. The difference is UX.
The most common UX errors
Too many order-process fields: Every additional field costs customers. Baymard Institute measured it: the average order process has 12.4 fields. We reduce to the minimum.
No guest option: 35 % of customers leave the shop because they must create an account. That is the average value at shops without guest order process.
Unclear shipping costs: Customers hate surprises in the order process. 48 % abandon the cart because shipping costs are higher than expected, not because they are too high, but because they become visible too late.
Poor mobile UX: Buttons too small. Forms not zoomable. Menus unusable. 60 % of traffic comes from mobile, but the conversion rate averages 1.5 %, against 2.8 % on desktop.
Mobile-First: Not Only Responsive, but Mobile-Optimised
Responsive means: it adapts. Mobile-optimised means: it was designed for mobile.
The difference is enormous. A responsive shop shows the same 12 fields in the order process, just smaller. A mobile-optimised shop asks for postcode and shows the city immediately. It offers express payments. It has a “buy now” button that skips the entire order process.
What research says
Nielsen Norman Group, the world’s leading authority for UX research, has proven that users evaluate a website in under 50 milliseconds. The first feeling arises before the first text is read. Speed, visual clarity and trust signals determine whether a visitor stays or leaves.
Page speed: Google’s Core Web Vitals have proven that pages with a Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) under 2.5 seconds convert better than slow pages. For a shop with 1m EUR revenue per month, load-time optimisation alone can generate five-figure additional revenue.
Mobile-first: Google’s mobile-first indexing since 2019 has shown: shops optimised for mobile rank better AND convert better. The gap between mobile and desktop conversion is not technically caused, it is UX-caused.
Order-process friction: Baymard Institute has analysed order processes worldwide for over a decade. The result: the average order-process completion rate is only 48.5 %. Half the customers who begin the order process do not complete the purchase. The main reasons are known and fixable.

| Make shipping costs transparent | +15–20 % order-process start | 2–3 days |
